Systemic enzymes operate throughout the body, in every system and organ. They function as biocatalysts — in other words, they make things work, or work faster. Without enzymes, the chemical reactions that are necessary to maintain bodily health would not take place.

Most of these enzymes are derived from what we think of as the protein digesting enzymes. While digestion is an important part of what these biocatalysts do, it is their absolute last function — first and foremost, body wide, proteolytic (protein eating) enzymes have the following functions:

NATURAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY
Inflammation is the way the immune system reacts to an irritation. Enzymes are the first line of defense against any sort of inflammation. Let's say you injure your right knee. Sensing the irritation, the immune system creates a protein chain, called a Circulating Immune Complex (CIC) tagged specifically for that part of the body. This CIC floats down to the right knee, causing pain, inflammation, and swelling — the classic earmarks for inflammation. At first this action is beneficial, in that it sends a signal that part of the body is injured and needs attention — but, inflammation is self-perpetuating, and it leads to an irritation that causes the body to create more CIC's, and thus, more pain.

Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Celebrex, Vioxx, and the rest of the Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory drugs all work by preventing the body from making all CIC's. This ignores the fact that some CIC's are beneficial, and vital to life — like those that maintain the intestinal lining and those that keep the kidneys functioning! Not to mention the fact that all Anti Inflammatory drugs, along with Acetaminophen, are highly toxic to the liver. Every year, 20,000 Americans die from these over the counter medications and another 100,000 wind up in the hospital with liver damage, kidney damage, or intestinal bleeding.

On the other hand, systematic enzymes are perfectly safe and free from dangerous side effects. They have no LD-50, or toxic dose. But, best of all, systematic enzymes can tell the difference between the good CIC's and the bad ones — hydrolytic enzymes have a lock and key mechanism and their 'teeth' will only fit over the bad CIC's. Instead of prohibiting the creation of all CIC's, systemic enzymes attack and eat up only the bad ones. In so doing they lower inflammation everywhere and reduce pain in the process.
